Some estimates claim the global video streaming market was valued at over $89 billion in 2022, with expectations that it would expand at a compound annual growth rate (CAGR) of 21.5% between now 2030. As the industry expands, the demand for servers and appliances purpose-built to handle the workloads and optimize for latency, bandwidth, density and power will commensurately expand as well.

This morning AMD announced it completed its acquisition of Silicon Valley adaptable computing powerhouse, Xilinx.

This year’s Adapt event kicked-off with a diverse array of disclosures regarding the company’s adaptable Alveo FPGA-based (Field Programmable Gate Array) accelerators, Kria robotics platform solutions and its Vitis SDK.

Adaptive silicon solutions heavyweight, Xilinx, has just announced a new line of SmartNIC, or intelligent, adaptable Network Interface Cards, consisting of not only the physical Alveo SN1000 line, but broad platform solution frameworks and references designs to address major market opportunities like AI-powered video analytics and algorithmic financial trading. In addition, the company has launched an FPGA platform app store with ready-to-deploy solutions that address several key markets, such as data analytics, video and image processing, HPC, machine learning, networking and security.

Competing in the semiconductor industry is often a game of chess, placing long term bets several moves ahead that culminate for a winning strategy. The announcement of AMD entering into an agreement to acquire adaptive computing powerhouse Xilinx for $35 billion in an all-stock transaction, is a proverbial case study in Silicon Valley power moves. The transaction will be immediately accretive to AMD margins, cashflow and EPS, but what’s more interesting to me is the technology that Xilinx brings to the table, as well as the substantial market impact the combined companies could have.

Though the field is advancing rapidly, we’re not quite there yet. Technologies being introduced today, however, inch us ever closer to that fully-autonomous future and enhance current vehicles with additional capabilities to improve safety, comfort, or both.

San Jose-based adaptable chip manufacturer Xilinx announced an update to its line-up of SmartNICs today, that leverages and array of new technologies. You can think of SmartNICs as intelligent Network Interface Cards that are targeted at the ever-changing and scaling needs of cloud data centers and high-performance compute applications.

As part of its evolving strategy, Silicon Valley bellwether Xilinx has been integrating this adaptive technology into platform accelerator solutions for machine learning, as well as domain specific architecture solutions that incorporate various compute resources like ARM cores, high speed IO and even RF functions.

At the Flash Memory Summit (FMS) currently underway at the Santa Clara Convention Center in Santa Clara, California, Xilinx is showing off a brand new member of its adaptable data center accelerator family, the Alveo U50. The Xilinx Alveo U50 is built on the company’s UtlraScale+ FPGA architecture, and targets scale-out and domain-specific acceleration of a multitude of data center workloads.
